Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), also known as gastric sleeve surgery, is another weight loss surgery option that has grown in popularity over the last few years since insurance companies have started to cover the cost of the procedure.  We are proud to offer this option at our Valencia, Los Angeles, and Santa Clarita, CA-area bariatric surgery practice.  The gastric sleeve surgery is an effective option for patients to lose a significant amount of weight. This procedure reduces the risk of developing serious, even life-threatening diseases that can be caused by obesity such as diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea and hypertension, to mention a few.  Please contact Town Center Surgery Weight Loss for more information, or to schedule a consultation.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)

The laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) procedure is one of the latest advances in weight loss surgery options available for patients in the Valencia and Los Angeles area. The VSG procedure is known for decreased rate of complications brought on by other weight loss procedures; however, as with all bariatric procedures, VSG is not without risk and should be discussed with in detail with our bariatric surgeon as you work together to formulate the appropriate surgical treatment plan.

Benefits of the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)

The benefit of the gastric sleeve when compared to the gastric band is that there is no foreign body, such as the gastric band. Therefore, the risks associated with the gastric band, are alleviated or no longer exist. Secondly, there is no need for periodic adjustments. Lastly, by removing part of the stomach, we are also removing the capacity of that removed stomach tissue to produce a hormone called grellin. We believe that the hormone grellin is responsible, in part, to trigger the hunger centers.

With the sleeve gastrectomy, the patients tend to have less of a desire for food after the surgery. Additionally, it is important to point out that the sleeve gastrectomy is a purely restrictive operation, like the gastric band operation, which means that it does not have an element of malabsorption like the gastric bypass surgery does. Therefore, with the sleeve gastrectomy, malnutrition is much less of a concern and worry when compared to the gastric bypass.”

The Gastric Sleeve Surgery Procedure

With the patient under general anesthesia, our unique approach incorporates the use of 3 incisions, each of which is no bigger than a grain of rice, 4 incisions that are 5 mm, each of them no bigger than a grain of rice, and 1 incision that is approximately the diameter of a quarter. The combination of smaller and fewer incisions results in a faster recovery with less pain and minimal scarring. Using an innovative stapling device, about 80% of the stomach will be removed, ultimately creating a thin “sleeve” while leaving the natural food openings fully intact. The new tube-shaped stomach holds much less food and helps patients feel fuller after smaller portions, allowing for significant amount of weight loss.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery Recovery

While patients should expect some discomfort and pain following the VSG procedure, this can be controlled with medication. Typically, patients are able to return to normal activities within one week of the procedure. As with any weight loss surgery, significant changes to diet and lifestyle are required, which is why our bariatric surgery staff conducts a number of follow-up appointments, further enhanced  by post-surgery support to ensure you are losing weight safely and effectively.
