LAP-BAND® Surgery

It’s becoming one of the most popular forms of weight loss surgery in America, and the reason is simple: effectiveness. The LAP-BAND® System, available here at Town Center Surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to limit the amount of food that you ingest in one sitting. By creating a smaller stomach pouch in which to intake food, LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding gives you an earlier feeling of fullness and thus prompts your body to start losing weight. What makes LAP-BAND® System surgery different from other types of bariatric surgery is the fact that this procedure is reversible and adjustable, allowing for more or less food intake as you progress through the weight loss process after the procedure. Plus, our LAP-BAND System surgeon serving the Valencia and Santa Clarita, California area performs the surgery laparoscopically, using smaller incisions which typically result in less visible scarring and shorter recovery times.

Many patients who have undergone LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding experience at least one to two pounds of weight loss each week after the procedure. The LAP-BAND® System has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has a proven record of helping people lose significant amounts of weight safely and effectively. Recently, the FDA issued new guidelines on the LAP-BAND® System, approving the procedure for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30, plus one or more obesity-related conditions. These conditions include hypertension, heart disease, sleep apnea, Type-2 diabetes, and other conditions.

LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding Procedure

LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding involves the attachment of a silicone band around the upper portion of the stomach. This adjustable band creates a smaller stomach chamber that holds less amounts of food when you eat. The band is inflated with saline through a small access port placed under the skin to restrict the stomach and allow for less food intake, or deflated to make room in the stomach chamber for more. The band can be adjusted or removed at any time, depending on your needs.

LAP-BAND® System surgery is performed laparoscopically. Our bariatric surgeon will use tiny instruments and a small camera to visualize the surgical field on a monitor. This allows incisions made during the procedure to be very small, resulting in less visible scarring and a more rapid recovery time.

LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding is typically performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes no more than an hour to complete.

LAP-BAND® System Recovery

You will likely be able to go home the same day you have LAP-BAND® System. Some degree of discomfort can be expected after surgery; however, this can be managed with medication.

LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding is only the beginning of your journey to healthier living. After the procedure, your diet will be significantly more restricted and your progress monitored for safety and effectiveness in follow-up appointments with our bariatric surgery team. Life after surgery will involve a number of changes in your day-to-day habits, and our comprehensive weight loss surgery program is designed to help you with these new adjustments.

Many patients who have undergone LAP-BAND® System surgery have lost an average of 70 percent of their excess body weight over two to three years. The procedure can dramatically improve your health and reduce the risk of developing serious health conditions associated with obesity.
