The American Obesity Association and the Centers for Disease Control estimate that 129.6 million Americans, or 64%, are overweight or obese. In addition to increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer, the economic impact of obesity is now estimated at more than $100 billion nationally. At his Los Angeles weight loss surgery practice, Dr. Marc Lussier discusses the potential for an obesity epidemic in light of these statistics, as well as an innovative approach to weight loss surgery that address a number of patient concerns.
129.6 million Americans, or 64% of the U. S. population, are overweight or obese according to a recent study from the American Obesity Association and the Center for Disease Control. At his Los Angeles practice, which specializes in weight loss surgery and post-bariatric surgery, Dr. Marc Lussier discusses the potential obesity epidemic in the U. S., and how some of the latest innovations in bariatric surgery provide potential weight loss surgery patients viable options for kickstarting their weight loss journey.
While Dr. Lussier suggests small, manageable changes often lead to more effective and steady weight loss, he adds that his patients often need help and inspiration to begin their healthy transformation.
One way Dr. Lussier says he and his Town Center Surgery team are improving the surgical aspects of weight loss surgery is through the use of micro-instruments, which allow them to perform cutting-edge bariatric procedures, such as the micro gastric sleeve. Inevitably, Dr. Lussier says the smaller instruments leaves smaller scars, which not only addresses a patient’s common aesthetic concerns, but also potentially reduces recovery time.

What an exciting time of the year to plan the “big changes” in our lives! For many of our patients who resolve to lose weight but have failed in years past, we recommend weight loss surgery. We offer the most popular and successful outpatient procedures: Lap-Band® (Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery) and Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve). Please read a brief description below, visit our website and come in and see us if it makes sense for you!
Lap-Band ®Surgery: The weight loss procedure commonly referred to as the Lap-Band ® is medically known as the Adjustable Gastric Banding System. With the adjustable gastric banding surgery, the upper part of the patient’s stomach is surrounded by a band that will restrict the stomach and make the patient feel full sooner while eating smaller portions. The band has a port that is used to fill the lap band to various levels with a saline solution by the patient’s doctor. The band surgery is reversible. Most patients lose an average of one to two pounds per week. Patients lose an average of 60%-70% excess body weight over approximately two years.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy is also known as the sleeve surgery. The sleeve surgery involves the removal of a large portion of the stomach. The portion of the stomach that is removed produces the hormone Ghrelin, a hunger hormone. By removal of this part of the stomach patients aren’t as hungry which helps patients lose weight even faster. The remaining tube-shaped stomach or “the sleeve” also holds less food and helps patients achieve a feeling of fullness after much smaller portions at mealtimes. There are no “fills”. The weight loss is “automatic” with proper diet and exercise! Patients lose an average of 70% excess body weight over approximately one to one and a half years.
It is best to consult with our bariatric surgeons, Dr. Michael Feiz and Dr. Monali Misra to determine which surgical weight-loss option is right for you. One of the concerns patients typically have when considering weight loss surgery to combat morbid obesity is the scars that result from surgical incisions. Here at Town Center Surgery, our bariatric surgeons have embraced the latest technology to help patients achieve successful weight loss through surgical procedures that leave little to no visible scarring. With STARR micro-gastric sleeve and micro-LAP-BAND® System surgery, patients can emerge from recovery with scars that are barely visible to the naked eye. STARR stands for Surgical Tiny Access and Rapid Recovery, and allows our surgeons to utilize a single, very small incision (2 to 3 millimeters) near the belly button to perform gastric sleeve or LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding surgery. For the gastric sleeve procedure in particular, that’s up to five incisions less than traditional techniques.
The STARR treatment is possible because of the SPIDER® Surgical System, an innovative set of surgical tools that allow our bariatric surgeons to perform procedures with greater precision and smaller incisions, which can ultimately lead to less recovery time.
Basically, the STARR treatment makes it possible to emerge from your weight loss surgery recovery with a scar about the size of a freckle. The next time you wear your bathing suit, you may not even notice the scar yourself, much less those around you!
Maddy B. is one of our many success stories here at Town Center Surgery. Maddy came to us just a short while ago to explore options on how she could effectively lose weight. Our bariatric surgeon Monali Misra, MD determined that Maddy could benefit from the state-of-the-art STARR Micro-Gastric Sleeve procedure. This weight loss surgery technique allows Dr. Misra to operate using tiny incisions (only 2 to 3 millimeters), resulting in an extremely small scar that’s barely visible.
Not only did Maddy’s surgery result in minimized scarring and less recovery time when compared with other bariatric surgery techniques, the STARR procedure is showing an amazing weight loss outcome. Maddy has lost 34 pounds in only 7 weeks!
Bariatric Surgeon in Los Angeles Offering Minimally Invasive Weight Loss Surgery
The SPIDER® Surgical System is a flexible, laparoscopic technology used to perform minimally invasive surgery. Los Angeles bariatric surgeon Dr. Marc Lussier says this latest advancement allows multiple instruments to be used through one incision, which not only reduces the number of incisions required with traditional procedures, but also offers the surgeon enhanced capabilities when performing single incision weight loss surgery.
Dr. Marc Lussier is the medical director of Town Center Surgery, which specializes in post-bariatric cosmetic enhancement and bariatric surgery in Los Angeles, CA. He is announcing the recent adoption of the SPIDER® Surgical System, which can potentially reduce the number of incisions, and lead to a faster recovery for patients undergoing weight loss surgery in Los Angeles.
The SPIDER weight loss surgery system® allows surgeons to perform a number of abdominal procedures through a single incision in the belly button, which is roughly the size of a dime. While minimally invasive techniques have been around for decades, Dr. Lussier says the unique design of the SPIDER system represents a significant advance over past procedures.
Dr. Lussier says he and his team constantly pursue the cutting-edge of their surgical field because the ability to offer their patients the safest and most effective procedures available is extremely important. Dr. Lussier adds that the ability to decrease the overall impact a procedure has on a patient not only improves intended surgical results, but can also improve the overall aesthetic result, which can often lead to a more satisfied patient.

Town Center Surgery’s very own Dr. Monali Misra now offering patients the STARR Treatment. STARR – an acronym for Surgical Tiny Access and Rapid Recovery. This procedure allows Dr. Misra to perform gastric sleeve weight-loss surgery through a small, single incision made inside the patient’s belly button.
Plastic Surgeon in Los Angeles Discusses Latest FDA Approval
At his Los Angeles, CA bariatric surgery practice, Dr. Marc Lussier discusses the latest approval from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration concerning the LAP-BAND System, and the potential effects it could have on more than 26 million Americans.
The FDA has approved the LAP-BAND® weight loss procedure for use in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-35 with one or more obesity-related comorbid conditions. The approval could have a tremendous impact on the more than 26 million Americans that fall into this category. According to Dr. Marc Lussier, this news from the FDA is exciting because of the life-changing effects a procedure like this can have on his patients.
According to the annual data collected by the Centers for Disease Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the FDA approval could more than double the number of patients eligible for weight loss surgery in Los Angeles. Dr. Lussier highlights the high cost of “dieting” in the U. S., as Americans spend billions of dollars each year trying to make the transformation on their own. “Diets don’t last. The term ‘yo-yo’ dieting usually is what most obese patients experience. Where they go on a diet and lose weight, but very soon after they go back to their ‘normal lives’ and the weight comes back and sometimes more than what they started with. This is very frustrating and can be depressing, not to mention the financial waste on a short term solution to a long term problem.”
While weight loss procedures such as the LAP-BAND system® or gastric sleeve provide safe and effective pathways to weight loss, Dr. Lussier stresses patients must commit to permanent lifestyle changes if they hope to achieve and maintain a healthy transformation. He and his team of fellowship trained bariatric/weight loss surgeons and the Town Center Surgery team are committed and experienced in the needs of bariatric patients to help their patients achieve their weight loss goals throughout the entire process.

The team of weight loss surgeons here at Town Center Surgery are pleased to announce a new surgical option at our practice that is gaining in popularity across the U.S.: the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure. VSG, also known as gastric sleeve surgery, can help patients with severe morbid obesity lose large amounts of weight and reduce risks of developing life-threatening health conditions such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure. VSG surgery involves the removal of a large portion of the stomach. The remainder of the stomach is shaped into a thin “sleeve” for digesting food, leaving the natural food openings of the stomach intact. This tube-shaped stomach holds less food and helps patients achieve a feeling of fullness after much smaller portions at mealtimes.
Gastric sleeve surgery does not involve placing a foreign body onto the stomach, such as that with adjustable gastric banding procedures, and can be helpful for patients who are at extreme risk of health conditions due to morbid obesity. The entire procedure can be performed with a minimal number of very small incisions, resulting in less residual scarring and quicker recovery time.
In addition to state-of-the-art treatment from a skilled bariatric surgery team, Town Center Surgery offers a comfortable, private environment for our patients. We are here to help you in every step of the weight loss surgery process.

Dr. Marc Lussier Implements Innovative Bariatric Surgery
Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), also known as gastric sleeve surgery, is a type of stand-alone weight loss surgery that permanently reduces the size of the stomach. Over the past several years, the procedure has grown in popularity due to its recent acceptance by insurance companies, and the fact that it does not involve intestinal rerouting or food malabsorption. Dr. Marc Lussier recently began offering the gastric sleeve surgery in Los Angeles, at his state-of-the-art plastic and bariatric surgery facility, Town Center Surgery.
Recently approved for coverage by major insurance companies, the vertical sleeve gastrectomy has grown in popularity because it presents patients with a weight loss procedure that does not involve intestinal rerouting or food malabsorption. Also called gastric sleeve surgery, this type of surgical weight loss technique permanently reduces the size of the stomach, and does not rely on gastric bands (a weight loss method designed to create a smaller stomach chamber). At Town Center Surgery, Dr. Marc Lussier recently started offering this innovative form of bariatric surgery in Los Angeles. He says he is proud to offer this effective weight loss option that allows patients to lose a significant amount of weight while reducing the risk of developing serious diseases that can be caused by obesity, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, and hypertension.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 34% of Americans age 20 and older are affected by obesity. This amounts to more than 72 million U. S. adults. Weight loss procedures such as gastric bypass and the LAP-BAND system in Los Angeles have been shown to help a majority of patients lose up to 75% of their excess body weight, coupled with a dramatic reduction in the risks of developing obesity-related diseases. In comparison to gastric bypass or gastric banding procedures, the vertical sleeve gastrectomy is not reversible; however, because the stomach continues to function normally, the gastric sleeve procedure requires fewer dietary restrictions and can often be performed when existing conditions would otherwise prevent a patient from having weight loss surgery.
The vertical sleeve gastrectomy is one of the latest advancements in bariatric surgery, and can often help people who suffer from morbid obesity keep their weight down and live healthier lifestyles. However, Dr. Lussier stresses that there is an inherent risk in all forms of bariatric surgery, which should be discussed in detail with a board-certified bariatric surgeon.
